Looking for great value School Ski Trips to America? Steve talks about Waterville Valley in New Hampshire and why he likes it so much…
School Ski Trips to America
The first time I arrived in Waterville Valley it was at night and it wasn’t until the next morning that I realised what an achingly beautiful place it is. The best terms I can think of are quaint and traditional but they probably don’t do it justice. Add to that the fantastic New England lodges, truly warm people and a hill that is great fun and you start to see why school ski trips America go to Waterville Valley…
School Ski Trips To America: The Snowy Owl…
Right next to the Town Square in Waterville Valley is the Snowy Owl Inn. When you walk into reception the first thing you notice is the Scarf wrapped around the moose head that takes pride of place above the fire. As I looked around I couldn’t help but think that this place is just perfect for school ski trips to America; its roomy without being so large that it becomes impersonal, it’s got a great pool, Steve the owner is brilliant and even better, my room had a Jacuzzi-bath!
School Ski Trips to America: The Hill…
Waterville Valley actually lies in the shadow of the hill but groups take an American school bus up to the base lodge. It’s only when you see the kids get excited about getting on the American school bus that you realise that sometimes it is in the small things… When you are on the hill you are the responsibility of Conrad Oldenberg and this is where Waterville comes into its own and the sheer strength of organisation starts to show. This isn’t the largest ski area (52Trails) but it is a triumph of quality over quantity and I defy you not to get the biggest of smiles from Upper and Lower Bobby’s run (Bobby being Robert Kennedy!). The ski school is great and the way that the trails are cut it means that whatever your level you will get to enjoy the whole mountain.
The X-Factor
There is an X-Factor for me… it’s a combination of all the things that you didn’t really know that you wanted. It’s a gorgeous place to be, the people are open and friendly and there is plenty of entertainment on hand. The icerink is in the Town Square and as well as skating you can catch an ice hockey match, which is much more entertaining than you would imagine. There’s a 50’s style ice cream parlour and the surrounding stores and coffee shops are quirky and very ‘small town America’. All these things together give you a sense of belonging that comes out of nowhere, a feeling of security and familiarity that I for one love. There you have it…
