This field trip (IB Geography Trip to Platja D’Aro Spain) is designed to align seamlessly with the IB Geography syllabus, offering students hands-on experience that brings theoretical concepts to life.
The program focuses on developing geographical inquiry skills, applying field methodologies, and critically analysing spatial patterns and processes. Through thematic studies of urban environments, coastal processes, ecosystems, and resource management, students gain insights into sustainability, human-environment interactions, and data analysis techniques—all central to the IB curriculum.
Students will also address key IB internal assessment (IA) objectives, equipping them to design, collect, and analyse primary data using IB-recommended statistical methods, fostering independent research skills.

Walk a section of the Camí de Ronda between Sant Antoni de Calonge and Palamós to study coastline morphology, tourism pressures and real-world coastal management. Recent storm erosion here has prompted local proposals for groynes/breakwaters, giving students a live case study in risk, cost and sustainability trade-offs.

Investigate one of Catalonia’s best-preserved megaliths near Romanyà de la Selva. This Neolithic “Catalan gallery” dolmen sits within a circular tumulus of granite slabs, opening discussion on burial practices, site selection, geology and how cultural landscapes are conserved.

Explore the Gavarres Massif around Romanyà to analyse cork-oak ecosystems, traditional cork harvesting and fire management, alongside rural settlement patterns and heritage links. It’s a compact setting to consider how primary industries, conservation and tourism coexist.

At the mouth of the River Ter, students explore a classic Mediterranean dune system from embryo dunes through yellow and grey dunes to damp slacks. It’s a strong case study for zonation, plant adaptations and how river sediment supply, wind and waves shape a dynamic coastline.
Platja d’Aro is part of the municipality of Castell Platja d’Aro. This means that although it is a bustling resort, just inland you’ll find Castell d’Aro, an ancient village that was built up around the fortified church and medieval castle. This historic part of the town’s legacy is thought to date to around the first century BC. Students can experience a Spanish Gymkhana, where they will purchase ingredients from local, authentic markets, don the chef hat to create tasty traditional cuisine.

The Caleta Palace, for example, is in a perfect location, right on the beach in Platja D’Aro. The Caleta Palace Hotel has consistently been the most popular hotel for Activ4 school trips. As a company we chose the Caleta Palace Hotel because of its outstanding location. It is only 300 metres into the resort of Platja D’Aro.
Groups can walk to evening entertainment such as; Magic Park, Karaoke and Miniature Golf. Plus, who wouldn’t want a beach front location and we do mean beachfront. Caleta Palace Hotel guests can enjoy a dip inside the refreshing outdoor pool or walk directly onto the beach and swim in the Mediterranean Sea.
