The first time I arrived in Waterville Valley it was at night and it wasn’t until the next morning that I realised what an achingly beautiful place it is. The best terms I can think of are quaint and traditional but they probably don’t do it justice. Add to that the fantastic New England lodges, truly warm people and a hill that is great fun and you start to see why school ski trips America go to Waterville Valley…
New Hampshire USA School Ski Trips: The X-Factor
There is an X-Factor for me……it’s a combination of all the things that you didn’t really know that you wanted. It’s a gorgeous place to be, the people are open and friendly and there is plenty of entertainment on hand. The ice rink is in the Town Square and as well as skating you can catch an ice hockey match, which is much more entertaining than you would imagine. There’s a 50’s style ice cream parlour and the surrounding stores and coffee shops are quirky and very ‘small town America’. All these things together give you a sense of belonging that comes out of nowhere, a feeling of security and familiarity that I for one love.

Where it’s held
Waterville Valley
Waterville Valley actually lies in the shadow of the hill but groups take an American school bus up to the base lodge. It’s only when you see the kids get excited about getting on the American school bus that you realise that sometimes it is in the small things… When you are on the hill you are the responsibility of Conrad Oldenberg and this is where Waterville comes into its own and the sheer strength of organisation starts to show.
This isn’t the largest ski area (52Trails) but it is a triumph of quality over quantity and I defy you not to get the biggest of smiles from Upper and Lower Bobby’s run (Bobby being Robert Kennedy!). The ski school is great and the way that the trails are cut it means that whatever your level you will get to enjoy the whole mountain.
Sample Itinerary for New Hampshire USA School Ski Trips
Day 1 Depart the UK, Arrive in New Hampshire
Depart from London airport bound for Boston. Your group will be met by a member of the Activ4 School Tours destination team and escorted to your coach for the transfer to Waterville Valley. The Snowy Owl is in easy walking distance to shops and restaurants and boasts an Indoor pool; outdoor pool; whirlpools; saunas; and access to Jacuzzi.
Day 2 First Day Skiing, Local Ice Hockey Match
After a short transfer up the mountain on an American School. Conrad and Greg who manage the ski hire will be there to escort you to ski fit. As with all areas of Activ4 School Tours programmes, evening entertainments will be carefully planned for your group. Tonight might be just the night to walk to the Ice Arena in the Town Square.
Day 3 Skiing, Pizza Night
Head out for another full day of fun in the snow. The Waterville Valley Ski School are excellent and Pete Weber who manages the Snowsport School is always on hand to discuss your progress. Tonight your group could hit the slopes again for an evening of tubing on the Ski Mountain and maybe a pizza dinner.
Day 4 Full Active Day, Local Basketball Game
Another active day and everyone starts to feel that they are making progress. One of the great things about skiing in Waterville is that skiers of all levels can enjoy the whole mountain. Depending on the schedule you could opt to head over to Plymouth State College (20 mins by coach) to catch a college basketball game.
Day 5 Skiing, Quiz Night
Set off for another exciting day skiing. Head on up the mountain for the start of the ski lessons. By now the students will have gained confidence and will be eager to show what they can do! A great end to your evening will be a quiz night.
Day 6 Last Day Skiing, Presentation Evening
The last day to make the most of the snow, so head on up the mountain. After a hectic week of intense lessons the students will all have made good progress. After saying your good-bye’s on the mountain it’s back to the hotel for a presentation evening bringing everyone together and recognising improvement and dedication throughout the tour.
Day 7 Depart USA
Unfortunately all good things come to an end and today you check out. A popular option is to hit the Outlet Mall. Then over to Boston Logan Airport for the flight home. Your tour officially ends when you get back to the UK, but with a trip this great we are sure that it will live long in the memory.
